英国剑桥大学博士后职位招聘--地震学、地球物理学或相关领域 Research topic: Influence of continental lithosphere on CO2-rich intraplate volcanism and Formation of Rare-Earth Element Deposits (REE-LITH) Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in seismology and thermodynamic inversion to work on a new NERC funded Pushing the Frontiers Project. The overarching goal of the project is to reach a fundamental new understanding as to how lithospheric structure and mantle dynamics control the origins of CO2-rich intraplate magmatism and associated rare-earth element (REE) deposits. The REE-LITH project involves a multi-disciplinary international team of Earth Scientists -- from the Universities of Cambridge (Gibson & Lebedev), Exeter (Broom-Fendley), St Andrews (Hutchison), Madrid (Fullea) and Bergen (Rondenay). An additional Postdoctoral Research Associate in igneous petrology and geochemistry is being sought for the same project (see jobs.cam.ac.uk_LB39036). The successful candidate will be based at the Bullard Laboratories of the Department of Earth Sciences, the University of Cambridge, and work with Prof. Sergei Lebedev and all other co-investigators in the research team. They will work with seismic tomography models and undertake thermodynamic inversion of seismic and other data in order to determine the physical structure of the lithosphere and underlying mantle. Joint analysis of the geophysical data and models with intraplate volcanic rock data will yield novel inferences on their origin, on the long-term evolution of continental lithosphere and on REE mineralisation. Applicants must have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in seismology, geophysics or a related field. We are looking for a candidate with substantial experience in computing and programming. Previous experience in seismic imaging and thermodynamic inversion is desirable. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, have a strong publication record (commensurate with their career stage) and good communication skills. The project titled: "Combining Algal and Plant Photosynthesis (CAPP)” involves the University of York, University of Edinburgh and Princeton University and aims to functionally test a proto-type pyrenoid-based CO2-concentrating mechanism in Arabidopsis. Photosynthesis drives life on Earth. However, the passive diffusion of CO2 from the surrounding environment to the active site of Rubisco can be limiting for photosynthesis. To overcome this nearly all algae have evolved CO2 concentrating mechanisms (CCMs) to concentrate CO2 in the proximity of Rubisco resulting in increased photosynthetic rates. The Mackinder lab (www.mackinderlab.weebly.com) focuses on the discovery and characterization of components of the CCM in a diverse range of algae. Building on recent discoveries in the model green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Mackinder et al. 2016, PNAS 113:5958–5963; Mackinder et al. 2017, Cell 171:133-147; Freeman Rosenzweig et al. 2017, Cell 171:148-162; Meyer et al. 2020, Science Advances 6:eabd2408; Mukherjee et al. 2019 PNAS 116: 16915-16920; Lau et al. 2023, Plant Cell 35:3260–3279) the CAPP consortium is now assembling (Atkinson et al. 2020, Nature Comms 11:6303) and testing (this project) proto-pyrenoid assembly in Arabidopsis to improve photosynthetic performance. Role Within the project, you will be the lead on testing activities of inorganic carbon transport channels and carbonic anhydrases expressed in Arabidopsis using a range of techniques. You will also work on the correct targeting of carbonic anhydrases to thylakoids that traverse engineered pyrenoids. You will interact closely with algal cell biologists (York and Princeton) and plant engineers (Edinburgh) and have opportunities to visit the University of Edinburgh and Princeton University to develop new skills. You will have a lead role, with guidance and supervision from senior colleagues. In addition, you will assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research, the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects, and the writing of research papers for publication. This role is fixed term for a period of two years. The Postdoctoral Scholar will work on projects focused on mapping, monitoring and modeling broad scale ecosystem changes, incorporating climate, land use and disturbance. The work will include extensive use of imagery from a range of sources, primarily satellite-based but also airborne remote sensing, climate observations, and climate projections to derive geospatial products characterizing ecosystem properties (e.g. canopy structure, biomass, habitat heterogeneity, disturbance severity, vegetation regrowth dynamics) and conservation priorities. The work will focus on a variety of ecosystems including boreal, temperate and tropical forests. There will be opportunities to work in the following areas: 1) fusing multi-sensor imagery, geospatial datasets and field observations to map and predict ecosystem properties and change, 2) modeling species distributions and vulnerability, 3) landscape connectivity modeling and landscape pattern analysis to identify biodiversity conservation priorities, 4) software and algorithm development using Python, Google Earth Engine, R and similar open-source platforms. In turn this has led to the proliferation of no-fault compensation schemes to provide redress in the event of an adverse event due to a COVID vaccine. Phase I of the No-Fault Compensation (NFC) Project has focussed on categorising all known worldwide COVID NFCS (138 were found).  This project is currently in phase II. This phase focusses on evaluating how these NFCS are actually performing by collecting key performance metrics from a 20+ schemes. Phase I was focussed solely on the NFCS itself. In contrast Phase II is a more complex task, which requires careful consideration not just of the NFCS but also of the wider social context in which they are operating, for example do long-established schemes have a greater level of claiming than newer schemes? Does the option to litigate impact on NFCS update? As we move forward to phase III (in March 2024) we will consider how NFCS impact on society move widely, particularly looking at vaccine hesitancy and scepticism.      Reporting to the Principal Investigator. The post holder is a member of a research group with responsibility for planning and carrying out research, particularly on vaccine hesitancy and vaccine scepticism. The successful candidate should manage their own academic research and administrative activities. This involves taking on aspects of the project independently and associated small scale project management, and co-ordinate multiple aspects of work (both the project holder’s own and the PI’s) to meet deadlines; adapt existing and develop new research methodologies to confirm or refute theories, and identify suitable alternatives where information or research material is restricted; prepare working theories and analyse qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining theories as appropriate; gather, analyse, and present qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, in particular statutory frameworks and other rules governing covid vaccine no-fault compensation schemes and contribute to project planning, including ideas for the next phase of this research project as well as new research projects.
