Post-Doctoral Research Associate – Department of Biochemistry & Cellular and Molecular Biology – 24000001GU
Description
A postdoctoral position is available immediately to study the regulation of protein synthesis in plants. The research will be conducted in the von Arnim lab in the Department of Biochemistry & Cellular and Molecular Biology in the Hesler Building on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
The specific project aims to understand the regulation of seed storage protein genes in soybean and is funded by the National Science Foundation. The entire project employs multiple genome-wide technologies over a time course of soybean embryo development to understand the contributions of regulatory layers at the level of DNA, RNA, and protein using experimental and mathematical approaches. The von Arnim lab emphasizes control mechanisms at the level of translation (protein synthesis from mRNAs) using ribosome footprinting and associated bioinformatic analyses. It is a collaborative project with teams at UT Knoxville and the University of Missouri – Columbia. The position is initially for one year with the prospect of extensions based on performance and available funding.
Duties/Responsibilities:
The candidate is expected to design and carry out independent research that advances the goals of the overarching project, balancing the priorities of the team overall with their own motivation, skillset, and research interest. The candidate will be involved in writing additional grant proposals, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications. The work requires aptitude in molecular biology, plant biology, and bioinformatics. The candidate must be self-motivated, quickly learn a new area of research and adapt published techniques to a new experimental system (soybean). The candidate’s primary responsibility will be to conduct and document research, one component being the training of junior lab members, including undergraduate and graduate students
