Job Title:
Postdoctoral Scholar (Agricultural Water Management and Water Quality)
Department:
FAES | Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering
The College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University (OSU) is seeking a postdoctoral research associate for the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE). The postdoc will lead monitoring and modeling studies of field-scale hydrologic and water quality processes.
The primary research focus for this position will be to investigate the impact of different management practices such as automated drainage water management, saturated buffers, and drainage water recycling on within-field and edge-of-field hydrology and water quality. The position will involve planning and designing experiments and organizing research and outreach activities.
The selected candidate will work on projects funded by commodity organizations and state and federal funding agencies such as the Ohio Sea Grant, US and Ohio EPA, and the United States Department of Agriculture. This work will be undertaken in partnership with USDA Agricultural Research Service and research collaborators at multiple institutions.
In addition to leading modeling efforts, this position will be responsible for coordinating multiple experiments in fields as well as controlled environments; collecting and analyzing data, writing manuscripts and reports; running and maintaining instruments used at the field; and preparing presentations along with attending, participating, or presenting at meetings, seminars, and conferences as needed. Additionally, the postdoc will be expected to disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at professional meetings.
The postdoc will have the opportunity to develop new research ideas within the broader context of the projects and develop new research proposals. This is a term position subject to annual renewals based on availability of funding and performance. The position will be located on the Columbus, Ohio campus. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Vinayak Shedekar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering. The successful completion of a university background check is required.

- Experience disseminating research findings through a variety of channels
Required Skills
- Knowledge of theories of drainage, soil-water dynamics, and hydrologic processes in the soil matrix and at landscape scales
- Experience using the hydrologic model DRAINMOD or an equivalent simulation model (HYDRUS, RZWQM)
- Experience and/or expertise in irrigation systems and irrigation water management
- Knowledge of programming languages such as FORTRAN, R, MATLAB, and Python
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work with interdisciplinary teams and mentor students
- Experience in working with crops in controlled environment in agriculture or hydroponic crop production is desirable but not required
