加拿大麦吉尔大学博士后职位招聘–气象学、大气科学或密切相关领域
Position Summary:
The Postdoctoral Researcher will conduct research in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at McGill University, Montreal QC, Canada under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Prof. Pavlos Kollias. The selected candidate will join the Radar Science that is a leader in several emerging areas of remote sensing including cm- and mm-wavelength radars, lidars, surface cameras, satellite observations, phased array and spaceborne radars. The successful candidate will join an international team of scientists and engineers from the European Space Agency, the National Research Council of Canada, and US Universities.
The candidate will work on improving our ability to detect convection from space using existing and planned spaceborne radar missions. In particular, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the ESA Wivern mission – short for wind velocity radar nephoscope – the only mission in the world that would measure wind in clouds, and deliver profiles of rain, snow, and ice water.
Carrying a dual-polarization, conically scanning 94 GHz Doppler radar, the mission would benefit the prediction of high-impact weather and hazard warnings for weather forecast models and contribute to the climate record of cloud and precipitation profiling.
In addition, the candidate is expected to analyze novel observational datasets collected from surface-based and airborne platforms for the study of cloud microphysics and dynamics and their interaction with the free atmosphere. The candidate is expected to have solid programming skills, and strong background in atmospheric physics. Salary negotiable to 45,000$.
Postdoctoral Researcher duties will include:
– (50%) Conduct analysis of surface-based and airborne based radar observations to evaluate the potential of the WIVERN radar to study deep convection.
– (25%) Develop novel methods for integrating models and surface/space-based observations for the study of deep convective clouds.
– (20%) Participate and assist in the preparation, writing, and publication of scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
– (5%) Other duties as assigned as appropriate for rank and title.
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand by December 2023.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a closely related field. Experience with radar meteorology, remote sensing, forward and inverse methods, and cloud microphysics and dynamics process-orient research. Knowledge of statistical data analysis, neural networks and/or machine learning techniques.
