Job summary
We are looking for a highly motivated Research Associate with practical experience in 3D bioprinting and device engineering to advance our 3D printing and transwell technologies for studying the gut microbiome. You will join our multi-disciplinary EPSRC project on building microbiome models being able to collaborate with team members and work in project partners labs, including time spent in the US. The work is incredibly timely (https://www.science.org/content/article/fda-no-longer-needs-require-animal-tests-human-drug-trials), and is a fantastic opportunity to join and set up a new group in the Department of Infectious Disease at the South Kensington Campus. Our research group–the Microbiome Printing Lab (https://mpl-group.github.io/)– focuses on building tractable gut microbiome models using 3D printing and flow systems. With this work, we hope to set a new standard for in vitro models of our gut microbiome, where we want to be able to image in real time the development of gut bacterial communities and host interactions (which is currently not possible when using mouse models). Our research group prioritises a healthy research culture, collaboration, and flexible work hours as needed. Duties and responsibilities
- You will develop/build new hardware and software for 3D printing technologies and transwell technologies to generate structed bacterial communities and co-culture of gut microbes and host cells.
- You will be responsible for co-supervising Masters, and PhD projects and for teaching and training of junior/new group members.
- You will be responsible for conceiving and implementing new project ideas and co-applying for future grants.
- You will present findings at national and international conferences and disseminate research outputs (via publications and/or patents).
- You will also contribute positively to equality, diversity, and inclusion within the research group and department, and to mental health and wellbeing within the research group.
Essential requirements
- You should have or be near completion of a PhD with practical experience in 3D bioprinting, device building, coding, electronics.
- You should be able to work as part of a collaborative team and help other colleagues when necessary.
- You should be able to supervise and educate junior co-workers.
- You should also be willing to learn new techniques and apply them in an interdisciplinary research environment, and be willing to play a key role in setting up and keeping the laboratory running by assuming a share of group responsibilities.

This is a Fulltime, fixed term role based at South Kensington Campus. The contract will run for 36 months in the first instance with possibility to extend another year subject to research funding.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 – £43,888 per annum.
