Job Overview:
Walton Institute is looking to hire a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on an SFI VISTAMILK Research Centre funded project linked to the research area of agriculture and in collaboration with Met Éireann. VISTAMILK is a world leading Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for innovative precision pasture-based dairying. Its mission is to positively impact the environment, animal well-being and the health of consumers and to lead the Agri-Food technology sector through innovation and enhanced sustainability across the dairy supply chain. Internationally, the advances developed in the centre will apply to dairy systems in many countries and will be a catalyst for global growth in the Agri-Tech sector. This will be achieved by greatly improving the soil to gut supply chain connectivity, thereby improving resource efficiency, better meeting consumers’ expectations and improving profitability and resilience.
Eligible applicants will have a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering atmospheric sciences, physics, mathematics, or a related discipline (or near completion). They are also required to have strong expertise and skills in GIS, programming and quantitative skills. Familiarity with grassland production systems is advantageous. Familiarity with meteorological data sets (gridded observations and numerical weather predictions) would also be beneficial. Key Responsibilities/ Duties:
- Apply research expertise to challenges in the areas of Agri-Tech sector and soil science.
- Perform basic and applied research in line with the objectives and workplan of funded research projects, under direction from the project Principal Investigator(s).
- Contribute to the design and implementation of soil moisture models and to display corresponding data on a mapping tool.
- The researcher will work closely with Met Éireann on SMD computations and development of an operational gridded SMD forecast model.
- Disseminate research results via publications in scientific conferences and journals.
- Participate in the supervisory teams of postgraduate research students.
- Work with the project Principal Investigator(s) and the SETU Technology Transfer Office to protect and exploit developed intellectual property.
- Contribute to the development of research funding proposals.
- Contribute to internal Walton research dissemination, knowledge sharing and training activities.
- Perform other tasks as set by the Walton Research Division Manager in order to progress the development of the unit.
- Carry out other such duties as determined and directed by the Director(s) of Walton Institute that contribute to the achievement of the strategic initiatives of the organisation.
Salary: The Gross Salary applicable to this post is: €42,038 p.a.
