Summary of the role
The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr Jamie Shutler. This externally funded post is available from 1 October 2023 until 31 December 2026.This position is part of the Convex Seascape Survey, a global scientific programme that seeks to discover exactly how the ocean performs its vital role as the world’s largest carbon sink, including assessing human influences on seabed carbon.
Funded by Convex Insurance Group Ltd., the project is being undertaken in association with Blue Marine Foundation, with science led by the University of Exeter in collaboration with UK and international partners. More information on the project available here: Convex Seascape Survey
The successful applicant for this exciting >3 year post-doc position will work closely with Dr Jamie Shutler on two main tasks. These are i) building shelf-sea carbon budgets for three shelf seas (e.g. starting with the approach by Kitidis et al., 2019) against which many of the scientific findings from the Convex project will be evaluated (e.g. to identify the importance of shelf water versus sediment to store carbon across global shelf seas). This will include the collation and analysis of existing published data, identifying novel datasets, and exploiting data and methods used in global observation-based assessments (e.g. as used within the annual Global Carbon Budget assessments). And ii) evaluate and develop the capability to use high resolution optical remote sensing observations (e.g. Planet Lab dove data and Sentinel 2 data) to quantify global sea-bed and water-column disturbance of carbon due to human activities, including that from trawling and mineral extraction. All of this work is expected to result in multiple high impact journal publications led by the successful applicant. It will involve working with other Convex partners and researchers, and will enable the successful candidate to present their work at meetings and conferences. If desired, the successful candidate will also be mentored by Dr Shutler and his team to support their career progression.
The successful candidate will join Dr Jamie Shutler’s research group which currently consists of five researchers all focussed on ocean carbon and environmental science. Whilst the campus on which the team is based hosts a diverse community of >300 academic researchers across most scientific disciplines and the arts.

About you
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.
