Postdoctoral fellow in bioremediation and microalgal applications
Linnaeus University
Welcome to Linnaeus University! We meet the societal challenges of today and tomorrow in a spirit of openness, curiosity and creativity. By creating arenas for exchange of knowledge from different subjects, fields and cultures, we open up for new ideas and create new opportunities for long-term sustainable societal development. Linnaeus University – where people grow.
The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as disease ecology.
Field of subject for the position: Bioremediation and microalgal applications
Placement: Kalmar
Extent and period: Agreement on temporary employment as a postdoctoral fellow, full time for two years from September 2023, or as soon as the position can be filled.
Work description
The Post Doc scholarship is part of the research group Marine Plankton Ecology and Applications and the multidisciplinary project ALGOLAND, which aims to develop biological solutions to address major societal challenges such as climate change, eutrophication and food/feed production in the Baltic Sea region. Microalgae are used to clean industrial waste streams, such as flue gas or process water and the biomass evaluated as animal feed supplement. The project is a close collaboration between academia and industry and has competence within biology, ecology, environmental science, sustainable development and economy.
We seek a highly motivated Post Doc with a strong background in bioremediation, microalgal applications or biotechnology engineering. The work involves the evaluation of autotrophic, mixotrophic and heterotrophic cultivation to recover nutrients and CO2 from industrial waste streams, using existing pilot-scale photobioreactors. And in collaboration with regional energy- and pulp industry evaluate the feasibility and cost efficiency of implementing microalgal solutions within forest-based industry.
The research will be conducted in collaboration with other scientist within the Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) within Linnaeus University that comprises expertise in ecology, evolution, and microbiology.
