About This Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to focus their efforts on developing their expertise and emerging research profile in their discipline. You will contribute to an ARC Discovery Project, seeking to examine the global biodiversity impacts of mining the materials needed to support renewable energy production.
The role is particularly suitable for an early career researcher who is passionate about conservation science and policy and has a strong background in spatial data analysis. It will provide a unique opportunity to work with some of the world’s leading sustainability scientists at UQ and abroad.
At this level, it is expected that you will contribute to service and engagement roles and activities within the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Research
· Develop state-of-the art approaches to modelling land use changes driven by mining and renewable energy production.
· Conduct biodiversity impact assessments under future energy, climate, and development scenarios.
· Review best practice approaches to mitigating the biodiversity impacts of mining and propose improvements to align prospective impacts with global conservation and other sustainability goals.
· Produce high quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing in peer reviewed scientific journals.
· Participate in applications for competitive research funding to support projects and activities.
· Work with colleagues in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.
Supervision and Researcher Development
· Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).
· Effectively lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.
· As appropriate, manage research support staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.
· Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.
Citizenship and Service
· Demonstrate citizenship behaviours that align to the UQ values.
· Show leadership of self through collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science.
· Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations as needed during other team members absences.
· Contribute to internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.
· Collaborate in service activities external to the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
· Develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.
This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre.
About You
· Completion or near completion of a PhD in a field related to environmental management, biodiversity conservation, or sustainable development.
· Strong technical skills in spatial data management, manipulation and modelling.
· Knowledge (and preferably demonstrated experience) in conducting global biodiversity impact assessments, including under future climate scenarios.
· An emerging research profile evidenced by a track record of high-quality publications in refereed journals.
· Experience in leading research projects and collaborating effectively with large international teams of academics.
· Experience and willingness to work effectively with project partners from government, NGOs and industry.
· Evidence of contributions towards successfully obtaining research funding.
· Some experience in meaningful internal service roles and contributions towards external.
What We Can Offer
This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 2 years, with the possibility of extending, at Academic Level A.
The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $74,308.68 to $99,426.59 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $86,941.16 to $116,329.11 per annum.
