Description
The spondyloarthropathies (SpA) include psoriatic arthritis (PsA) which is associated with psoriasis, axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) including ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and arthropathy associated with Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, reactive arthritis and acute anterior uveitis. These diseases share many common clinical features including extra musculoskeletal manifestations which are genetically determined. Immunologically, these diseases are genetically and therapeutically linked to TNF or IL-23/17 axis cytokine axes with the primary target tissue in the skeleton being the enthesis, the insertion point of ligaments or tendons. Collectively these diseases have a similar prevalence to rheumatoid arthritis and cause significant physical and mental burden with low remission rates and no cure, leading to significant costs to the individual and society.
