The Kourembanas Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital/ Harvard Medical School seeks a qualified individual for a newly available Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the Division of Newborn Medicine.

We examine epigenetic mechanisms regulating the responses of the innate immune and cardiorespiratory systems to injury signals associated with abnormal oxygen tension (hypoxia and hyperoxia). Preventing lung inflammation in the perinatal period can protect from the development of pulmonary hypertension and lung injury while facilitating homeostasis and tissue repair. Among the therapeutic approaches we currently investigate are the anti-inflammatory functions of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells and their secretome, including extracellular vesicles/exosomes. 

We are seeking motivated and innovative individuals to join our studies on Lung Biology, Developmental Immunology & Regenerative Medicine, focusing on the epigenetic changes associated with lung injury & immune function in the early perinatal period.

Responsibilities:

·        Integrate knowledge from lung biology and immunology to determine the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying lung injury and repair of the developing lung in response to oxidant stress, inflammation, and secondary insults.

·        Apply a variety of tools and data analysis including genetic, molecular, and cellular bioassays, flow cytometry as well as in vivo studies to characterize the immune pathways that resolve inflammation and promote normal lung development disrupted by hyperoxia.

Requirements:

·        Requires a PhD (or equivalent degree) in molecular biology, or immunology, cell biology, or related discipline.

·        Experience in cell and molecular biology, immunology, flow cytometry, lung biology, stem cells, other complex bioassays, as well as in vivo studies using mouse models are highly desirable and will complement current research directions.

·        Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts with demonstrated success as exemplified by peer-reviewed publications, scientific creativity, and independent thought.

·        Excellent collaborative skills with ability to work, train, and mentor others.
