Performs research, provides general laboratory assistance to the Principle Investigator, Dr. M. Rosca, in conducting research on mitochondrial pathogenic mechanisms in chronic diseases and therapeutic approaches targeted to mitochondria to correct organ (heart, brain, retina) damage induced by mitochondrial defects. The employee is expected to function semi-independently and will be mentored with the long-term scope of becoming fully independent. The research is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health and CMU College of Medicine.
The position is awarded for a minimum of one year period and may be renewed according to available funding.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in a life science related field. The candidate must possess basic laboratory skills, experience with general laboratory equipment, including biohazard hoods, centrifuges, balances, autoclaves, etc. Experience with mammalian cell culture: general principles of isolation of cells from animals, culture conditions, genetic manipulation (up or downregulate gene transcription)
Experience with ELISA, Western Blot, RNA extraction, protein extraction, real- time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, chromatin immunoprecipitation, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, molecular and cell biology techniques
Animal handling skills and genotyping. Experience with assessing insulin sensitivity, dissecting and harvesting rodent organs.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

About the Department
The CMU College of Medicine welcomed its inaugural class in the summer of 2013. The innovative medical school curriculum is designed to prepare students for practice in mid- to northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, with particular attention to primary care needs in the region.
