Position Information
Essential Job Duties
The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will conduct hypotheses-driven research projects aimed at enhancing our understanding of the effects of low-risk fumigant, cover crops, grafted and resistant tomato genotypes on suppressing soil-borne pathogens, influencing microbial communities, and enhancing tomato yield and fruit quality. To reach this goal, the selected candidate will combine approaches such as high-throughput metagenomics, bioinformatics, plant pathology, greenhouse and lab assays, field studies, and microbiome-related data analysis and lead a research program to find practical solutions for problems facing the tomato industry in western North Carolina. There will be also opportunities to collaborate and interact with members of the Plant Soil Microbial Community Consortium (PSMCC), Center for Integrated Fungal Research (CIFR), Bioinformatics Research Center (BRC) at NCSU and AgTech Hub at Research Triangle Park (RTP), Durham, NC. The postdoc will meet frequently with Dr. Adhikari to discuss best practices in grant writing, manuscript preparation, and mentoring.
The position will be based in Raleigh, NC but field experiments will be conducted in summer at Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center, Mills River, and Waynesville, NC. Program vehicles are available for field trips.
Other Work/Responsibilities
The Postdoc will develop methods and procedures appropriate to the research goals. Trouble-shootings and alternative methods and procedures where appropriate. Results of findings from experiments are published in manuscripts and technical reports. The incumbent will also make oral presentations at professional meetings. The Postdoc will be expected to publish refereed and technical articles, present research seminars, participate and present research findings in the scientific and growers’ meetings.
Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm
Department Required Skills
Ph.D. Degree in Plant Pathology, Molecular Genetics, Microbiology, Microbial Ecology or a related field.
Experience in metagenomic analysis of microbiomes.
Supervise graduate students and technicians is also expected.
Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Knowledge of next generation metagenomic sequencing analysis, field data analysis, including SAS, R, and other statistical software packages and knowledge on other relevant computer software.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Experience in handling PCR machines, laboratory equipment, such as balances, pH meters, microscopes, culture shakers, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, autoclave, images scanner, and personal computers and computer peripherals.
Required License or Certification
Valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
The position will be required to drive pick-up trucks to travel to research sites and on the farm.
