Epidemiologist/Statistician/Research Fellow (80%) In Paediatric Respiratory Medicine
University Of Bern
Description
Epidemiologist/Statistician/Research fellow (80%) in Paediatric
Respiratory Medicine Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) at the University of Bern
The Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) at the University of Bern performs research in a range of disciplines relevant to public health (www. ispm.ch). Groups cut across divisions, facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to research in the fields of clinical epidemiology, social and behavioral health, biostatistics, and international and environmental health.
The Paediatric Epidemiology Research Group conducts population-based and clinical studies in child health, with a focus on respiratory disease.
Asthma and chronic cough are common childhood problems. There is evidence for the co-existence of distinct asthma phenotypes, with varying risk factors, clinical presentation, short and long-term outcomes and response to treatment. Many children have transient problems at preschool age, but others develop chronic disease. Clinical care and research would profit, if we could predict, which children will have severe short-term outcomes and a chronic disease course. We look for an experienced research fellow, who will co-lead a research group of 3-4 people on childhood asthma. This includes managing a multi-centre clinical asthma cohort in Switzerland (Swiss Paediatric Asthma Cohort, SPAC), analysing data from population-based and clinical cohort studies, such as SPAC or the Leicestershire cohort studies and writing scientific manuscripts.
Main tasks:
Analyse data from clinical and population-based cohort studies to determine risk factors and prognosis of cough and wheeze in children; develop prediction models and distinguish phenotypes
write publications in peer-reviewed journals and present results at conferences
Support PhD students in manuscript preparation and statistical analyses
Requirements:
PhD, MD or MSc in Paediatrics, Paediatric Pulmonology, epidemiology, statistics, or similar
At least 3 years’ experience in epidemiology or public health in a medical setting; strong interests in respiratory health; clinical experience highly welcome
Strong writing skills and experience in drafting scientific manuscripts in clinical epidemiology.
Statistical programming skills, with experience in Stata or R including generalized linear models, multi-level models and survival analysis. Experience in meta-analysis and latent variable modelling would be an asset.
Organizational skills and ability to work efficiently in several parallel projects.
Ability to work independently and interact with interdisciplinary teams. Ability to communicate statistical methods and results to non- statisticians.
Excellent knowledge of English (German would be an asset).
The post is available from October 2021, with negotiable date of start and offered for 2 years initially. Salary depends on qualification and experience
