The University of Melbourne is consistently ranked among the leading universities in the world, we are globally engaged; comprehensive; research- intensive; and committed to responding to the major challenges of our time.
The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) is strongly committed to supporting diversity and flexibility in the workplace. Improving the representation of women is necessary in our goal to innovate and to strengthen FEIT’s reputation as a best-in-class centre of research.
School of Electrical, Mechanical and Infrastructure Engineering (EMI) recognises that engineered systems of present and future significance increasingly have connections to all three.
We are the oldest engineering school in Australia – initially founded in 1861 – and have evolved into a vibrant community of internationally recognised researchers passionate about addressing major challenges of today and into the future.
About the role:
This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow to join our multidisciplinary team developing a multiscale model for the design of novel materials optimised for cold spray forming, a new manufacturing technology that is used to create coatings for repair, restoration and enhancement, and additive manufacturing.
Partnering with Ruag Australia and funded by the Australian Research Council, you will develop a practical tool for the accelerated design of metal powders for cold spray forming and invent commercially useful advanced materials to improve the competitiveness of Australian manufacturing industry.
To be successful, you will have experience and expertise in computational modelling of materials. Knowledge of thermodynamics, particulate materials processing, high strain rate deformation plasticity and the properties of metals will be an advantage.
You will conduct independent research leading to patents and publications in journals and conferences. You may undertake small amounts of teaching and research supervision directly related to your area of research, as required. You will be located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) and will be expected to be an active member of the Department, collaborating with other researchers.
About You:
Naturally you will be capable of demonstrating your prior record of achievement in the following:
- PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Skills and experience in modelling and simulation for materials design
- Record of high-quality research as evidenced by publications in tier one journals
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated by presentation of research results at conferences, internal forums and published papers
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Additionally, it would be desirable (but not necessary) if you if you also had experience in relation to any of the following:
- Particulate materials processing
- Computational thermodynamics, particularly of the CalPHaD (Calculation of PHase Diagram) method
- Thermo-Calc, Matlab and Python
For specific responsibilities of this role please refer to the attached Position Description.
You will be supported to pursue achievement in all four pillars of an academic career:
- Research & Research Training
- Contribution to Teaching and Learning
- Service and Leadership
What we offer you
We offer flexibility, whatever that may mean for you. Many of our benefit programs and onsite amenities are aimed at supporting you – including generous leave, childcare subsidies, discounted parking, medical and health care. We offer extensive opportunities for personal and professional development, and we’ll support you in doing what you love.
We seek to increase the diversity of our workforce and the representation of all members of our community that have been traditionally under-represented.
If you’re curious, motivated and ready to undertake a meaningful and rewarding role we’re ready to meet you.
