The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts translational research primarily on metabolism, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease in order to improve health and healthcare in the community. The overall goal is to create an excellent translational research environment of a very high international standard.
Pathological conditions, e.g. obesity, diabetes and myocardial ischemia, are associated with altered lipid and energy metabolism. We are now recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to investigate the underlying mechanisms for the altered metabolism, and how this affect function in cardiomyocytes.
Subject area:Experimental cardiovascular research
Subject area description
Studies of lipid metabolism and mitochondrial function in the heart of genetically modified mice. Particular focus on the importance of PCSK9 in extrahepatic tissues.
Job assignments
Isolation and culture of primary cardiomyocytes and hepatocytes isolated from genetically modified mice.
Detailed characterization of mitochondrial function with Seahorse, studies of cardiac function in genetically modified mice, confocal microscopy, global and targeted analysis of gene expression with RNAseq and qPCR, gene silencing in cell culture with siRNA or in genetically modified mice with tissue-specific techniques, protein analysis (Western analysis). Compile and analyze results and writing of manuscripts.
Eligibility
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.
Assessment
PhD in a topic relevant to the job assignments. Very extensive experience in cell culture techniques, especially in isolation and culture of primary cardiomyocytes. Methodological expertise in studies of genetic alterations of cellular proteins and gene expression and analysis by qPCR and quantitative immunoblot. Experience of confocal microscopy.
Requirement that applicants have extensive experience of studies on mitochondrial function (Seahorse). Experience of studies on PCSK9 is particularly meritorious. The applicant’s personal suitability is of great importance. Proficiency in English (writing and talking) is a requirement.
